Top 10 Summer Perfumes and a Prize Draw

"A something in a summer’s noon —A depth — an Azure — a perfume —Transcending ecstasy..." To celebrate the season, everybody at PST named one perfume they've been enjoying the most lately; below, is our collective Top 10 of Summer; please share with us your favorites!

Alyssa
Paestum Rose by Eau d’Italie. After several weeks of ninety-percent humidity and temps above 100 degrees, my summer struggle is less about what perfume to wear than how to stay awake. Lately, I’m reaching past the usual suspects to Paestum Rose. This resinous, dark-hearted beauty is one of my favorite fall scents, but right now the pepper braces me up and the sweet myrrh, dark rose, and dry woods make me feel like I’m walking in the cool of a pine forest under an occasional magical shower of velvet red petals. Somebody send me a full bottle, please.

Beth
Soir de Lune by Sisley. Is it the honey or the jasmine or the chili pepper that makes it so compelling? Perhaps a little bit of moon magic? Who knows, but I cannot hug anyone that I meet without them burying their face in my neck and sighing over “that amazing fragrance....God what is that?” Definitely a desired effect...absolute bombshell in a bottle and I adore it!

Donna
L'Air du Desert Marocain by Andy Tauer- the more I wear this the more I love it; it's good in any sort of weather but it really comes into its own in the intense heat of summer. The combination of incense, spices, cedar, jasmine, vanilla, patchouli and vetiver conspires to create pure magic on the skin, evoking fantasies of faraway places and dreams of desert passion.

Kelley
L'Eau de l'Artisan by L'Artisan Parfumeur. According to the website, L'Eau de L'Artisan adds to the traditional notes of citruses, herbs and tree moss a fresh twist of marine accord and hay. On me, this starts out as the most wonderful, sunny, lemon verbena. After a short while, it morphs into a delicious violet leaf that reminds me of my great grandmother (not a bad thing). This is a very light and fresh scent that is perfect for the heat.

Linda
Champagne de Bois by Sonoma Scent Studio. I find its dry aldehydic sparkle both comforting and refreshing. To my nose, it perfectly represents the scent of orange peels, both green and dried, without a trace of the sweetness that would come from a twist of ripe orange. Supported by soft whispers of clove and sandalwood, and even softer hints of labdanum and vetiver, this works for me for every summertime activity: a sunrise walk on the beach, a hike in the hills, a late-evening dinner party, or a midnight movie.

Marian
Amra by Agarscents Bazaar. Amra's herbaceous note of basil, combined with fresh grapefruit, dry orris, white musk as gentle as a summer breeze and the saline scent of ambergris make it a refreshingly cool "Arabian oil" to offset the suffocating humidity of Manhattan summers.

Marina
L'Eau de L'Hermine by Lostmarc'h became my unexpected summer favorite. The gently candied blend of lavender and citrus, at once fresh and sweet, strangely comforting in its soft, child-like cleanness is all I want to wear these days. It goes so well with the sun, the sand, the ocean...the carefree joy, and the I-will-think-about-it-when-Autumn-comes mood of summer.

Marla
Saks Boca Raton by Bond No. 9 was a thoughtful gift from my family, and I believe it was limited to a few hundred bottles, all sold at Saks Fifth Avenue in Boca Raton, Florida. The notes are lily of the valley, blackcurrant, gardenia, freesia, amber, cedar, cardamom, and musk. This is a light, sweet, floral gourmand, with a daintily spicy drydown, and it's been truly perfect for hot summer days in Florida. If anyone influential from Bond No. 9 is reading this, please put this charming perfume in your regular lineup!

Paul
Yatagan by Caron is the perfect summer fragrance because I go away from it for a while and then return; like it were seasonal and the scent wears well in the heat of the day and the heat of the night.

Tom
Une Rose Chyprée by Andy Tauer: velvety roses and geranium lifted by spice and citrus. A souffle of edible flowers that has that rich Tauerade drydown but is perfect for a summer day.

If you would like to participate in a prize draw for a 1.7oz bottle of L'Eau de L'Artisan, say so in your comment. The winner will be announced when we return from our vacation. Enjoy your summer, everybody!

Tiempe Passate has such an understated beauty to it. It works for me for all occasions, all seasons. The sun warms it on my skin to a floral beauty, the winter chill brings out it's woody depths. Never before have I been so deeply attracted and affected by a scent for so long. I must also appreciate that it does not work for many people.

Please enter me in the drawing for the L'Artisan bottle.

I like light citrusy chypres with hint of bitter aroma in summer. Maybe L'Eau de L'Artisan would be a good idea. Thank you for entering me in the drawing. Alica

Manoumaila and Turtle Vetiver, both by LesNez, Amouage Homage Attar, vintage Shalimar, and my old standby hot weather faves, Tubereuese Criminelle and Carnal Flower, PdN's Le Temps du Fete & Odalisque, Divine, Quartz & Missoni by Missoni. I know, I know, I should have probably something light and airy in the mix, but I never seem to reach for them somehow. Perhaps L'Eau de L'Art will be The One, so please enter me in the drawing :)

Excess. The ancient and coarse feel of San Fermin feasts in Pamplona, the stillness of fields scorched under a punishing sun, and the respite of a sip of elderflower under a heavy oak, or the bite of lemon and mint slush, or the beauty of swimming obliviously under a turquoise wave. To balance that excess, citrus rules - Orange Verte by Hermes, Eau d'Hadrien (outdated, in a way, but still a marvel), but then also the reverberation of fig as in Phylos., and the woody crispness of Cristalle de Chanel, and the ardent pulse of Noix de Tubereuse by Miller Harris, or, gracefully clad in golden light, the skin meeting bath oil and body lotion of Tolu by Ormonde Jayne. But I also think L'Eau de l'Artisan is soft and civilized, and Eau d'Hermes is a nod to perfectly ironed cotton that is not totally unsexy.

Hm, I guess my summer perfumes are not sooo summery : LeLabo's Poivre (London special), Oud and Figue. But I haappily alternate them with Goutals Hadrian, L'Eau de l'Artisan and with quite a few ones from J.Malone's (Grapefruit, Basil & Mandarine, Nectarin Blossom).
Have a nice holiday !

I've only just recently delved into the world of perfume, but I'm totally obsessed (pouring over perfume blogs for hours every evening out on my patio)! For the summer I have a small collection of L'Artisan's Ananas Fizz, Les Nez Turtle Vetiver and Moroccan Mint Tea by Ava Luxe. I hope I'm not too late to enter the draw!

This summer has yet to fully emerge...we've a long and drawn out labor here in the middle midwest...it's hot and muggy, it's cool and wet...so I've been enjoying the ability to pull out the old guns for multiple kinds of weathers and learn how they work beyond their usual boundaries.

Usual suspects include Mandragore, Eau Imperiale, Jean Nate...new this summer is Matin d'Orage...newly appreciated in summer are DK Gold and a few leather scents... But, I must confess, I have a prized summer delight that I love for hot and cooler weather: Eau de Patou. (Runs and takes cover, because yes, it is discontinued.)

Would love to be in the L'Artisan Eau draw...thanks!

The refreshing, light scents of Olivia Giacobetti are the way I would like summer to smell: L'Ete en Douce, The pour Ete, Bonte's Bloom. I'd love to be entered in the draw for her L'Eau de L'Artisan. Thanks!

Well, it's hardly been summer here in Maine...rainy and cold for the past weeks!!! I've snuck in a few summer fragrances during that time, though also dipped into my winter stash (actually wore a WOOL SWEATER one of those days - crazy).

So, I'm anxiously looking forward to seriously breaking out the summer favorites. Currently, they are:
- Bobbi Brown Beach
- Juicy Couture (a fav all year round - especially in summer)
- Le'a by Saffron James
- L'Artisan's Premier Figuier
- PdN's Eau Turquoise
- Cologne a la Francaise
- Rive Gauche

I also suspect a couple of scents I have coming in the mail may qualify - Eau Noire and Kenzo's L'Eau Par Kenzo Pour Femme.

What did I just spritz on this morning? Dzing! Strange choice, but who wants to follow rules???

Would love to be included in the draw! Thanks Marina et al for this offer and for such a wonderful blog. Have a great vacation!

I would love to be entered into the prize draw for th L'Eau de L'Artisan.

Alyssa, Beth, and Donna- Thank you for naming three of my favorite fragrances and giving me "official permission" (LOL) to wear them in summer! I thought they were more "winter" fragrances (I'm so happy to be wrong) but am delighted that you consider them warm weather fragrances. Living in South Florida I thought I would be tormenting those around me with my love of ambers and patchoulis in the dense heat. But no more!!!!

So far I'm just collecting samples and "training my nose," but on a foggy Northern California morning like this one I want something light but spicy, like Eau Lente. If the sun actually comes out, I lean towards Eau Illuminee, Osmanthe Yunnan, and Rose Ikebana. I would love to be included in the draw, and am enjoying learning how different everyone's summer favorites are.

Well, I'm new at the perfume game, so I don't have a huge store of familiar smells on which to draw. But my favorites for this cold, wet summer are Timbuktu from L'Artisan and New York from Parfums de Nicolai. On the other hand, I like to vary things, so during the current trip (three weeks away from home) I brought a stack of samples to try, and fell in love with two strange ones: Aoud Lime from Montale, and Or Black from Pascal Morabito. (It had to be expensive and hard-to-get stuff, didn't it?)

Please enter me in the draw!

My summer scent has been Herba Fresca for days when I need a kick, but recently I find that my usual suspect of Hiris + En Passant does beautifully in the heat =) Now having read everyone's top 10 I'm planning my days of AG Musc Nomade, Violette Encens, and SL Fleurs d'Oranger.

Speaking of the L'artisan.. I should go dig out my sample but would love a bottle =)

NJ has been having an unusually mild summer this year so I'm finding a lot of the "spring" scents are still wearing nicely: Joy, Apres L'Ondee, and SSS has re-released its Cameo with a gorgeous Rose+Violet+Sandalwood+Orris combination. I think Shalimar Eau Legere (especially combined with Jicky edt) is fabulous for the summer. Heartily agree with the selection of the two Tauer and the SSS Champagne!

This being my first summer of my perfume-mania, I haven't really stuck to any summer scents - other than occasionally spritzing myself with some B&BW Mango Mandarin or CK One Summer after showering in the evening.

No, despite it being over 100 degrees for a good half of June and continuing into a sweltering July, I've been happily sampling away and swanning about in Mitsouko, L'Heure Bleue, Coco, Shalimar, Bois des Iles, etc. I think that I gave the SA at Ulta a heart attack when he kept trying to sell me a Summer edition of something and I sprayed Coco on one wrist and Opium on the other.

When I am picking something lighter for the summer though, my standby has been Tuberose Gardenia -same as for the Spring.

That being said - I am still looking for a perfect fruity, fizzy, citrusy fragrance. I would love to be entered in the drawing.

I adore L'Artisan's Ananas Fizz but wish it lasted longer. Enjoying my samples of Creed Virgin Island Water and Escale a Portofino. Have also enjoyed a spritz now and then of Jil Sander Sun. Received it as a gift, thought it rather ho-hum but am finding it wears quite nicely in the hot weather.

I'd love to be entered into the drawing.

Enjoy the vacation--will miss your updates!

Hello Marina et al.,
Thanks for your recommendations! I am loving Ginestet Sauvignonne and 16130 Yuzu Rouge. It hasn't even been so hot here, relatively speaking, but they're lovely even so. Citrusy and light yet still interesting!
Please enter me in the contest for the L'A L'Eau! Thanks,

Finally! A list a can relate to!! I've been reading all the other lists, and have felt like an outsider, with none of my scents mentioned...

Basically, I live in Paestum Rose these days (a signature scent), and crave Incense Rosé and L'Air du Desert Marocain...

I would also add Manoumalia and Let Me Play the Lion.

I keep searching for a good orange fragrance for the summer (I use l'Occitane's Orange Blossom Home Fragrance around the house during the summer, and it is lovely.

Please enter me in the draw for the L'Artisan bottle.

I am still looking for my new summer scent! I've tried many so far with Creed Love in White and Hermes Kelly Calethe being favorites. They just don't seem summery enough though.

Please enter me in the drawing for the L'Artisan bottle - this may be the one!

This summer my favourite scents are: Hermès Un Jardin Après la Mousson (it has grown on me and now I'm enjoying it a lot), Sugar by Fresh, Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilic (a stapler), Demeter Wet Garden, Diptyque Tam Dao (I love it in winter too) and Rosine Écume de rose.
Please, enter me in the draw! Thank you :)

Many thanks for your "tops"; fascinating how many radically different fragrances will make it into a "Summer Top 10"! Incidentally, yes, I wouldn't mind being entered in the "L'Eau de l'Artisan" prize draw.
Happy Hols, all.

Ooh, pick me, pick me! (Please.)

I never get tired of Bulgari Eau de Thé Vert in the summer. I also love Diorissimo - for everyone else it's a spring thing, but its airiness makes it perfect for summer too. And I second the vote for Eau de Merveilles.

I love what everyone selected, particularly since a few of these fragrances are new to me. And I am thrilled to see Paestum Rose mentioned by Alyssa. It reminded me of other Eau d’Italie fragrances I have been neglecting lately.

I'm going to be rather boring and admit that Clinique Happy to Be is my go-to summer scent XD It's light, creamy, refreshing, and goes beautifully with my Skin Trip body lotion!

Oh, and I'd love to be entered for the bottle drawing =)

I've discovered I love Tom Ford Velvet Gardenia even more in the summer than in the winter. It really blooms in the heat. Others I'm loving include Ava Luxe Rosa de la Luz, Annick Goutal Neroli, AG Petite Cherie, L'Artisan Mure et Musc, and Marc Jacobs Fig.
I would love to be entered in the L'Artisan drawing.

Great Blog! Summer hits for me, Paestum Rose, one breath and I’m entering a cool marbled duomo where incense has been burned for millennia and fresh roses en masse have been left at the alter in fullest bloom. Cristalle Eau de toilette was love at first inhale and decades later it never falters for me, citrus sunshine in a bottle. Vintage Abano cologne parfumee, I get bergamot, honey, almonds, hay, moss and patchouli. A beach ready scent with a 70’s cool chic vibe.

Please enter me in the drawing for the L'Artisan bottle.

Eau de Shalimar, Chevrefeuille by Annick Goutal, and L'Heure Attendue by Patou - it should suit Autumn as it's a soft smoky woody fragrance, but there's a soapy element, too: I LOVE IT! - Emma

Champagne de Bois and L'air du désert marocain are two of my favorites...I also love Paestum Rose. I had expected and hoped to love Une Rose Chyprée, but it did not agree with me. I will have to try it again, being a huge Tauer fan. Please enter me in the drawing!

Would love to participate in the draw . . . I don't remember the scent of l'eau de l'artisan. I liked it, but it's been a long, long time. I haven't settled on a 2009 summer scent. I want something rosy, but haven't found "my" rose. Frustration! Wearing Ormonde Jayne scents, as usual.

Recently I ordered some Annick Goutal Eau d'Hadrian soap from Aedes. Amongst my chosen samples was L'Eau de L'Artisan... Oh my goodness, so so so wonderful. Items from this list are quite unknown for me, but I like fragrances. L'Artisan perfumes are not sold in my country, so it would be great to have it. I use this summer Light CLouds of Moschino and Boss Orange. Thanks. Lubica.

Somebody send me a full bottle, please.peninggi badan

And, all perfumes in Your list are also great!
