Xerjoff Shingl & a prize draw

By Marina

A gorgeous iris scent with an unfortunate name and a cold. There. My review is done. OK, fine, I will elaborate on the key points:

Name. The perfume is from Xerjoff's Shooting Stars collection, therefore, upon googling, I am guessing that the name might stand for Shingle Springs meteorite, Shingle Springs, El Dorado Co., California, a meteorite fall discovered in either 1869 or 1870 (source). I am guessing it was not meant to evoke "a viral infection that causes a painful rash" (source). But it does.

Iris, to me, is the dominant note in the composition. It emerges early, in the top notes, a couple of seconds after the heady mix of bergamot, basil, anise and rum hits the nasal passages with the smell uncannily similar to that Vicks VapoRub. Thus - iris with a cold.

Gorgeous
. Can a fragrance that makes one think of a couple of deseases at once be attractive? Apparently it can. I actually like the chilly, mentholated smell of Vicks, so that might be a reason. Another reason is the opulence of the orris accord in Shingl. Not unlike that in the sublime Iriss, it is so thick and buttery, you could cut it with a knife. It also smells warm, like the softest, most luxurious cashmere shawl. The contrast of the coldness of the "Vicks" accord and the warmth of orris is very appealing. Before now, I have only known of tuberose (see Tubereuse Criminelle) and gardenia (Volo Az 686) being treated, pun intended, in this manner. I like the fact that the juxtaposition can be felt from start to the very finish, even in the ambery, slightly vanillic base.

Shingl is quite possibly the most unique iris fragrance I have encountered, its weird beauty is something I'd urge you to experience for yourself. Besides, 'tis the season of congestions, wouldn't it be nice to replace the old rub with something this glamorous (and, yes, expensive) and get better in style? On that note, stay healthy, everybody!

Shingl is available at Luckyscent and Xerjoff, $345.00-$470.00.

If you would like to receive a set of 5 Xerjoff samples, say so in your comment. A commenter will be chosen at random.

The Xerjoff line sounds beautiful to me. Would love to be able to sample. Iris fragrances always do the trick for me, i have not tried an Iris fragrance i have not liked yet.

I love, love, love Irisss, so am wondering how Shingl compares. I've got to admit that I'm having a hard time imagining a combination of Vicks and Irisss, but if you say it's gorgeous, I trust you 100% No need to enter me in the draw, but thanks for the opportunity. I'm gonna to purchase a sample from Luckyscent right now :-)

I am interested to test Shingl because we distill essential oil, reputedly decongestant, from our organically-registered (British Soil Association)aromatic conifers here in Scotland.

Oh, I'd love those five samples!

I have a sample of this, but I haven't tried it yet. Why tempt fate, you know what I mean?

But of course, now I need to know... off to sniff...

Another iris disguised in "Shingles" - oh, want to have! I'd love those samples too, but I am not sure I am allowed in the draw (employees excluded and so forth ;))

"Iris with a cold" is killing! Mr Bonkers has a cold at the minute and is surprisingly amenable to all manner of vitamins and medicaments. Could this be the perfect moment to attempt to re-introduce him to perfume via a medicinal back door?

Shingl is a curious-sounding choice from a house whose name is already pushing the envelope in terms of oddity! : - )

oh, no, another tempting Xerjoff fragrance. I love my iris buttery, so of course I'd love to try Shingl (and iriss, truth to be told ;)).
As I do have a cold at the moment, I could put to good use those vicks effluves... I do like its smell, too.
Please, please, please enter me in the draw!

I'm always up for sample-trying. And Vicks Vapo-rub is appropriate, as I have 1 child with a horrible headcold, during vacation week, no less.

I left the "child with a head cold comment", pre-coffee. My bad!

I would quite like to try this. There is a scent, by another line, that I describe as Noxema gone Wild. It's a staple of mine. Iris & Vicks sounds right up my alley. Thanks so much for the opportunity.

I would like to be included in the draw. I have come close to actually ordering samples but what if I loved it? Then what would I do? I don't think I could bring myself to pay that much for a bottle-- I could get Bois des Iles and Cuir de Russie for the same amount.

With iris being one of my favorite perfume notes, this sounds like a must try - despite the name. In fact, I almost didn't read the review because of the name, which would have been a shame. I would love the chance to try the assorted samples! These givaway opportunities are so fun - thanks. ~Victoria

I still get a nervous twitch when I hear the word shingle in any iteration...I had a bad case in my late 20s....all the way down the back of my left leg. I should probably order a sample of this for cathartic purposes!

And I'd love to win a sample set, thanks!

I've not smelled an iris that bowled me over to date. I have noticed in my short tenure as an aspiring sniffisto that context is everything. I thought I hated amber until Ambre Sultan. I didn't know I could love a rose until Rossy de Palma (still not completely sure!).

I'd like to be considered for the Xerjoff drawing. Isn't their name borderline obscene somehow? Couple it with "Shingl" and I envision date night at the swinging elderhostel!

I would love to win the sample set, being the Vicks Vapo-Rub fan that I am. :-) I like Iris too, but Vicks really floats my boat (did it used to be stronger? It seems like the mid-60s Vicks of my youth was awesome in its head clearing power.)
